WEEK 5

Topic 5 : Microbial Interactions

Assalamualaikum and hello all!!!!!.
This week we only have one class for microbial ecology.. sobs sobs~ hehe

THURSDAY, 26 March 2015....Before we start our lecturer ask us to go to the link padlet.com/zuhainis/microbeinteraction and each of us must share an information about our topic today which is the Microbial interaction. Unfortunately, me and Aina could not get the internet access therefore we borrow Aisya phone to share what we have found one microbial interaction.

This is what we share in the padlet. Its about the commensalism interaction of microorganism with host (human).

After that, we discuss about our SCL on Life Without Microbe. Its gonna be like an event in our faculty and all of us are the involve. I'm as a treasurer $_$ huhu.. This event will be held on 21th of Mei 2015.

Continue our lecture on microbial interactions. So basically microbial interactions is about interaction of microorganism in the ecosystem and to differentiate the type of microbial interaction within the ecosystem. There are three types of microbial interaction which are endosymbiont, ectosymbiont and symbiont.

the summary of what I learnt from Thursday lecture.

We had only 15 minutes lecture but we got full of information and the overview on what we gonna learnt on the next week. That's all ^_^

WEEK 4

Topic 4 : Distribution of microorganism

In this forth week we study on topic 4 which is the distribution of microorganism. This topic is basically about the distribution of bacteria at the places that follow their needs and have a correct nutrition for their growth. Then, we will be looking for the physical and chemical factors affecting the microbial distribution.

Growth limitation by environmental factors, there are two laws which is :

a) Liebig's Law of the Minimum

b) Shelford's Law of Tolerance

Both laws determine the presence and success of organism in an ecosystem.

Physical factors affecting distribution of microorganism
  • Solutes and water activity
  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Radiation

So we look one by one on the physical factors that affecting the distribution of microorganism. Solutes and water activity is about the changes in the osmotic concentration. Hypotonic solution is a solution with low osmotic concentration. Water will enter into the cell and making the cell to burst while hypertonic solution is a solution with high osmotic concentration. In this solution water will move out from the cell and making the cell shrink (plasmolysis). Amount of water available to microorganism can be reduce by interaction with solute molecules (osmotic effect) and adsorption to the surfaces of solids.

Temperature will affected the enzyme catalyze reactions. If the temperature beyond the maximum temperature of bacteria growth this the enzyme in the cell denatured and also the transport carries and other proteins also will subject to damage and disintegrate membrane. At low temperature membrane would be solidify and velocity of enzyme reaction is very low.

The pressure at the land or surface of water is 1 atm while in the deep sea the pressure is about 600 until 1100 atm (place where barotolerant will inhibit chemical reaction. Barophilic microorganism is a microorganism that dependant on high pressure. It will under go a rapid growth when in high pressure. Radiation, the major source of heat is infrared. UV radiation is the most damaging to living organisms.

Chemical factors affecting distribution of microorganisms :
  • pH
  • Oxygen concentration
  • water
  • carbon
  • nitrogen. phosphorus and sulfur
  • special growth factor
  • trace element
pH is the measure of hydrogen ion activity of a solution. There are four types of microorganism based on the pH tolerance which is acidophiles (pH 0 to 5.5), neutrophiles (pH 5.5 to 8.0), alkalophiles (pH 8.5 to 11.5) and extreme alkalophiles (above pH 10). We can see a few types of microorganism based on the oxygen concentration like aerobes, anaerobes, facultative anaerobes, aerotolerant anaerobes and microaerophiles. Water occupy almost 75-90% of cells. The function of water is as solvent and also for cellular function and also in metabolism.

Carbon is importance for chemical building block for cells and as source of energy for some microorganism. Special growth factors is specific nutrient such as amino acid or vitamin that was needed in low concentration. Trace element is for the enzyme to function or neede in the metabolism and it is not necessary to specifically provide.

These are the factors that I have learnt from the lecture and because of these factors making the bacteria come to that specific place.

Thursday we have test 1. This test cover 4 topics fom the principle of microbial ecology until distribution of microorganism. After finish the test about one hour, Dr Wan give us a bit explanation about our SCL task. That's all for this week see again next week.

WEEK 2 & 3

Topic 2 : Microbial group

This second topic is about the microbial group. Basically what I learnt in this topic is about the three major form of life which is eucaryotes, procaryotes and viruses. For eucaryotic microbes, we only focus on the fungus, molds, algae and also protozoa. First of all before we started our class on Monday we had given a task to take a picture on how and what method we use to study.

this is my method of study...so I choose to do a mind map because it easier for me to memorise the keyword....hehea

So above is my mind map that I have made after study the lecture note that had been provided by my lecturer. After finish the mind map I took a picture of it and uploaded it in the edmodo.

In the monday evening Dr. Wan asked us agained to seat with group member because we gonna do another group work task. For today group work task we have to divide everyone to every topic that we have in Microbial Group and do a summarize. So I got FUNGI....

this is my summarize about fungi.

Fungi is an eucaryote. The characteristic of fungi is multicellular and multinucleated (except yeast), fungi is a spore bearing organism and they are absorptive heterotroph and also saprophytes. Fungi did not have chlorophyll therefor they cannot be a photosynthetic organism because they cannot undergo photosynthesis. Their cell wall is made up of chitin. the primary storage of polysaccharides for fungi is glycogen. Fungi are stationary organism and they disperse by the wind, animal and water.

There are four type of fungi that we have which is chytrids ( Chytridiomycota), zygote ( Zygomycota), sac (Ascomycetes) and club (Basidiomycetes). Fungi have three types of feeding forms which is saprobic heterotrophs, parasitic heterotrophs and mutualistic heterotrophs. Saprobic heterotroph is organism that feed on dead or decaying material organic matter. Parasitic heterotroph feeding on living host at cost to the host. Lastly, mutualistic heterotroph is feeding of or with living host without damaging it and both got benefit.

This is the overall of my other group member summarize.

Oh before I forget, we do this activity in the Popplet. All of us must sign in into the popplet and one person in every group must make a new popplet page for their group and invite other group member. each group member must contribute in giving their summarize in the popplet. So above is my group popplet mind map.

That's all for today...I'm got more knowledge when I do this activities because I search and read so many new things about fungi and other organism while searching for the content for my summary...hehe

THURSDAY!!!! 4 hours lecture!!!

4 hours lecture!!..sound like crazy but actually its very relaxing and I have a lot of fun in this 4 hours lecture. Before the class start our Dr. Wan odered 'nasi lemak' for all of us. weeeeeee ^-^.. Then, all of us must connect to the wifi but unfortunately not all of us can connect because the wifi cannot support all 45 devices that we have. So, a little bit messy in the morning, our Dr call the technician to fix it.

While the technician do their job, we start our lecture on the microbial group. In this topic we focus on the microorganism ecological role.

This is all of the ecological role of the microrganism that I had learnt from the lecture.

After we have a lecture about 2 hours we took a break for 10 minutes. This is the time for us to eat the 'nasi lemak' weeeeeee... Its so delicious I like it. Thanks to Dr Wan who bought that nasi lemak' for us. I really enjoy ate it...hehea..

Start agained our lecturer on the microbial group. Then, Dr wan ask us to connect to the internet to do next task in the Quizlet. This is an individual task. I need to fill in 50 terms with its difinition and its all must be related to our next topic which is Microbial nutrition and metabolism.

this is apart of my terms in quizlet.
After done with quizlet exercise, I and all of my classmate have another task. This time it was a quiz, very interesting and fun quiz we have. I really enjoy it. My lecturer ask us to open Kahoot.com and join the quiz in the form of game. Its like a game and played it with all of the classmate. First time I played this and make me feel really nervous. I'm really had so much fun for today.

IT'S FRIDAY NOW!!!

Today is our replacement class for 2 hours. For today lecture we continued last night lecture on the microbial group. Today I study on the General consideration of microbial features . There are 5 general consideration of microbial features.

microbial features
1) Microbial size
2) Microbial cell structure
3) Microbial cell replication
4) Cell nutrition
5) Cell behavior

After finish on the microbial group topic, then we go to another topic which is Microbial nutrition and metabolism. Focus on nutrition first, in nutrition we will learnt about diversity in nutritional requirements of microorganism. Most microbes require fewer nutrients than do large life forms. The function of nutrient requirement by a microbe is similar or identical to that of a large life form.

terms related to temperature.

TERMS RELATED TO pH is :
-acidophiles (low pH)
-alkalinophiles (high pH)

TERMS RELATED TO LOW WATER ACTIVITY :
-osmophile (can stand hypertonic)
-xerotolerant (dry)

After we finish on the microbial nutrition lecture, we must connet to the internet and again we play kahoot.

After finish playing this game and the winner is Cheo, so end of our fun for today and for this week..hehe..hope we will play again this game next week...thats all thank you..

INTRO

WEEK 1

Assalamualaikum and hey everyone!!

This is my forth semester and this semester I have enrolled in the Microbial Ecology courses. I'm looking forward to start this semester and especially the ecology class. My lecturer for microbial ecology class is Dr. Wan Zuhainis. Unfortunately, our first class of ecology have to cancel but our lecturer have already provided a task for us. The task is we must find an article that related to the Principle of Microbial Ecology.

This is the article that I have choose.

From the article relate what you have read with the Principle of microbial ecology.

THURSDAY, ( 9-11 am)

First class of microbial ecology for this semester. In this first class Dr. Wan has give us some briefing about what we going to do and learnt this semester in this subject. We go through the learning outcome and outline. After that we have to form a group of 6 to 7 people in one group. I in the group 1 with Hidayah, Aisyah, Aina, Fareeza, Erfiana and Amalina. Then, Dr. Wan explained to us about the SCL. We have 5 five SCL to do : 3 SCL is a group work and another 2 SCL is an individual work.

That's all what I do in this first class. Thank you!!!!

WEEK 2

MONDAY, ( 4-5 pm)

Week 2 has started guys and i'm really excited. for this second week and second class of microbial ecology I have many activities in class with my group and classmate. My microbial ecology class started at 4.00 pm until 5.00 pm. In this one hour class, I have some activities with my group member. First activity : we needed to choose one of our group member article from the first task in Edmodo, read it and try to understand and relate it with the Principle of microbial ecology. We must type what we get and understand from the article in the padlet.

This is our reflection and what we understand about the Principle of microbial ecology based on the article that we chose. Please have a look at our group reflection (group 1) hehe

At the same time while read and looking for the Principle of microbial ecology, we in a group require to state what topic that we gonna do for another SCL : Live Without Microbe in padlet also. So we have decided to do a topic that related to the environmental field on the oil-degrading bacteria.

Last but not least, before the class end our lecture ask us to comment on the other group reflection on the Principle of microbial ecology based on their article. So, my group chose group 7. Have a look above on the left.

THURSDAY, ( 9-11 am)

Today is two hours class of Microbial Ecology. First of all before the lecture start my lecture Dr. Wan point a few student and she will asked a question. I'm felt very nervous at that moment (afraid if I unable to the question that she asked). After several question have been asked, now its time for the lecture. We go through the slide quickly because all of us have read the lecture note before coming to the class.

What I have learnt from the lecture? Basically what I learnt from this lecture is about the discipline in the microbial ecology, we have 6 disciplines which is applied ecology, human/plant/animal ecology, physiological ecology, population ecology, ecotoxicology and political ecology. (but we more focus about on microbial ecology. There are 2 strategists in the microbial ecology that have been used by the microorganism which are r and k strategist. r strategist is about the reproduction. This strategist have high rate of reproduction and high growth rate while the K strategist is about the adaptation. k strategist have low reproduction rate but this strategist is more stable. the conclusion is K strategist is better than r strategist. In ecology we have two type of succession : autogenic succession and allogenic succession. End of the lecture!!

Now its the time for the group work!! huhu .. we have to sit in our group and summarize on the topic that we have learnt.(without referring to the notes oke)

tadaaaa!!! this is my group summary.

That's all what me and my classmate did in the microbial ecology class for this week. The clss end with a peace..hehe ..see again next week.
